Cardio Direct

Doppler Ultrasound

A Doppler ultrasound looks for blood clots, plaque build up and other blood flow problems in the arteries.

Cardio Direct offers 3 types of Doppler ultrasounds:

  • Carotid
  • Lower limb
  • Aortic

Carotid (stroke assessment)

The carotid Doppler ultrasound is a painless and non-invasive procedure that measures precisely the extent of thickness of any plaque build-up within the carotid arteries. The carotid arteries are located in the neck and supply blood to the brain. The carotid Doppler ultrasound is indicated when assessing the risk of stroke. It is a non-invasive procedure and takes 15-30 minutes to perform.

Lower Limb (varicose vein screen/ DVT screen)

The lower limb Doppler ultrasound is the scan of choice in diagnosing venous disease. It is pain free, non-invasive and very accurate in diagnosing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). It is often used prior to varicose vein surgery. It is a non-invasive procedure and takes 15-30 minutes to perform.

Aortic (AAA screen)

An aortic Doppler ultrasound looks at the abdominal aorta and is used to detect the presence of an aneurysm. An aneurysm is a weakness or ballooning of the arterial wall. It is a non-invasive procedure and takes 15-30 minutes to perform. Aortic Doppler ultrasounds are recommended as a standard screening procedure for men who are over 65.
